How to Create a Family Safety Plan in 30 Minutes

Emergencies don’t wait for us to get ready—and when something goes wrong, panic fills the gaps where preparation should be. That’s why having a family safety plan is non-negotiable. The good news? It doesn’t take hours or complicated binders. You can create a solid plan in just 30 minutes.

At California Defense Academy in Murrieta, we teach real-world self-defense skills, but prevention and planning are your first—and strongest—lines of defense. Here’s how to get your family ready fast.

Step 1: Pick Two Safe Meeting Spots

Choose one place near your home (like a big tree or a neighbor’s porch) and another outside your neighborhood (like a library or family friend’s house). These are your go-to spots if you need to evacuate or get separated.

Pro tip: Make sure kids know the exact address of the second location.

Step 2: Teach “Check-In” Rules

Agree on a simple rule for emergencies: “Text or call first chance you get.”
If phones are down, pick a designated out-of-town contact (grandparent, family friend) who can relay information for everyone.

Step 3: Create a Code Word

This is a lifesaver. Pick a family-only word to use if someone else needs to pick up your child unexpectedly or if your child feels unsafe. Example: “Blue Sky.”
If they don’t hear the code word, they don’t go. Period.

Step 4: Walk Through Common Scenarios

Spend 10 minutes on quick, what-if drills:
What if there’s a fire? (How to exit and where to meet)
What if someone knocks at the door when home alone? (Don’t open, call parent)
What if you feel someone following you? (Go to a safe public place and call)

These discussions reduce fear and build confidence.

Step 5: Review and Repeat

Write down the plan, stick it on the fridge, and review it every few months. The more familiar it becomes, the faster everyone will react when it counts.

Why This Matters

A family safety plan isn’t about living in fear—it’s about living prepared. When everyone knows what to do, panic turns into action. And action saves lives.

At California Defense Academy, we help families in Murrieta go beyond planning by training real-world self-defense skills for when avoidance isn’t an option. Because when preparation meets ability, confidence replaces fear.
