Safety in Seconds: 60-Second Drills Parents Can Do at Home

Think teaching your child self-defense takes hours? Think again. With just one minute a day, you can build habits that could save their life. These quick drills aren’t just fun—they help kids develop awareness, quick thinking, and confidence so they know what to do in real-world situations.

At California Defense Academy in Murrieta, we teach kids Krav Maga because it’s practical and easy to learn. But safety doesn’t stop when class ends—you can reinforce it at home with these simple 60-second drills.

1. The “Who’s a Safe Adult?” Game

Goal: Teach kids how to identify people who can help in an emergency.

✔ In 60 seconds, ask:

  • “If you got lost in a store, who would you go to for help?”
(Answer: A store employee, a mom with kids, or a police officer—not a random stranger.)
✔ Practice naming 2–3 safe adult options in different places—stores, parks, schools.

2. The “No Means No” Voice Drill

Goal: Help kids find their strong, assertive voice.

✔ Have your child stand tall, look you in the eye, and say:
“Stop! Back away!”
✔ Repeat 3 times, each louder and more confident.
✔ Add movement: Take a big step back as they say it.

This builds verbal boundaries and body language that discourage bullies and predators.

3. The “What’s Around Me?” Challenge

Goal: Boost awareness and observation skills.

✔ Sit your child in one spot for 10 seconds.
✔ Then ask:

  • “What color was the car outside?”

  • “How many people were sitting near the door?”
✔ Increase difficulty: Have them close their eyes and point to the exits.

In class, we call this “situational awareness”—and it’s a skill that keeps kids safer everywhere they go.

Why These Drills Matter

Each drill takes less than a minute, but the lessons stick for life. When kids know how to use their voice, recognize safe adults, and stay aware of their surroundings, they’re already ahead of 90% of kids who’ve never practiced these skills.

At California Defense Academy, we teach kids more than self-defense moves—we teach life skills that build confidence and character. Reinforcing these drills at home means your child is prepared for anything.
